Shanghai Museum of Glass

"Using black lacquered glass for the interior (cases, floor, furniture, walls), but left the existing structure untouched. The museum building is a former glassmaking workshop, one of 30 former bottling-plant structures that the Shanghai Glass Co. still owns.

The black, sleek glass of the interior reflects the LED lights and screens positioned throughout the space, creating a shiny and glittering multi-dimensional feel. This emphasizes the interaction, interdependence and influences of periods, continents, materials and peoples involved in the art, craft and industry of glass.

The design of the space and exhibits and the use of various media help create an interactive and participatory museum experience where the visitor is directed through the story of glass."

In order to cut down on costs, resources and waste, I had to rethink the design of stationery. Plans of 9 different items are printed on one sheet of paperboard using only two printing inks. A paper with excellent environmental credentials from Gmund has been used.

DJ Light

DJ Light is an immersive public sound and light installation that gives visitors the power to orchestrate an awe-inspiring performance of light and sound across a large public space. It was created for energy company Endesa as the cornerstone of their Christmas celebrations in Lima, Peru.

DJ Light is about the exhilaration of one person taking control over a massive space and manipulating the incredible array of light and sound within it using nothing more than their own body. It is an empowering experience where the public is invited to be the artist.
The installation consists of 85 giant globes of light, each capable of displaying millions of colours. As the “guest DJ” assumes their position on the podium, they can use their arms to point and gesture. These movements are translated in real-time into beautiful movements of light and generative sound across the space.

Each of the inflatable globes contain custom LED lighting, designed and fabricated for maximum controllability and energy efficiency. Each globe has a unique identity that allows the colour to be controlled from the main DJ podium. Suspended above the podium is a high accuracy thermal tracking camera that has been developed by Cinimod to allow for live tracking of the “guest DJ”. By tracking every movement of the person below, this camera communicates control signals to the main software programme that is responsible for the live sound and light generation.

Only 4 hours from Seattle, these minimalistic rolling huts are in Washington’s Methow Valley. Designed by local Olson Kundig Architects to similate Thoreau’s simple cabin in the woods; that structures take second place to nature.

"Responding to the owner’s need for space to house visiting friends and family, the Rolling Huts are several steps above camping, while remaining low-tech and low-impact in their design. The huts sit lightly on the site, a flood plain meadow in an alpine river valley. The owner purchased the site, formerly a RV campground, with the aim of allowing the landscape return to its natural state. The wheels lift the structures above the meadow, providing an unobstructed view into nature and the prospect of the surrounding mountains. "

Upside Dome - Gijs Van Vaerenbergh

Creating a simple, elegant installation amidst the fanciful ornamentations in a baroque church is no mean feat, much less in one of the most prestigious ones. Pieterjan Gijs and Arnout Van Vaerenbergh, however, managed to accomplish this and more. Set in St Michiel Church in Leuven, the duo make use of the fact that the church lacks a dome to create an 'upside dome' inside the church's nave.

Comprising a few hundred meters of chain, the suspended dome is constructed using the technique of the caternary or funicular, a method used to calculate the forces in an arch (most famously used by Gaudi in constructing the Sagrada Familia). Here, the chains forms both literally and figuratively the counterpart of the unfinished dome, simultaneously modelling its structure and its full-size model.

Fragile future iii - DRIFT

We can't think of anyone who doesn't like dandelions. And apparently the brilliant designers at DRIFT like them so much they weren't content to simply watch as the seeds scattered to the winds. They utilised them in an intriguing modular lighting system named Fragile Future III, telling the story of how the extremes of technology and nature combine to survive in the future.

The delicate beauty of the dandelion LED lights is amazing enough, but the frame holds its own as well. A clean geometric structure formed only from perpendicular lines, its modular yet asymmetrical form allows for varying compositions.

Bus Roots is a green roof system designed for buses by Marco Castro Cosio. Ethereally speaking, it grounds the urban, metallic inflexible atmosphere of modern transport with the essence of nature. Logically speaking: it’s a green roof for a bus. Showcasing a contained sprawl of mostly low-growing succulents, the project posits: “If we grew a garden on the roof of every one of the 4,500 buses in the MTA bus fleet, we would have 35 acres of new rolling green space in the city.”

Japanese designer Yuko Shibata created separate living and working areas in this Tokyo apartment by installing two mobile walls. Called Switch, the brilliant design features one partition that slides out over the dining table to create a meeting room on one side and library on the other. The second bookcase pivots round at the end of the day to reveal a bedroom.

From Shibata:
This is the interior design of a single home office. It was the owner’ s intent that the floor plan could be changed to completely separate the living and office sections. This request was rendered impossible, due to the original structure being of box frame type reinforced concrete construction, with almost all walls acting as supporting building frames. The addition of two bookshelves, each with a large door, allowed us to create a space with the ability to adapt from home to office or from office to home, while leaving the original floor plan intact. The first bookshelf was added to the meeting room. By moving the large door, the meeting space can be divided in two. The space on the side of the bookshelf becomes a library. The large door also includes an opening in order to allow it to pass over the dining table. In this way, the table is shared between the library and meeting spaces. The second addition was in the bed room.The opening in the bookshelf creates a passage making it possible to approach the shelf from the office, without passing through the bedroom. When the door is opened, it creates a partition between the the bedroom and study, and also has the effect of changing the space to a library.

Isn't this perfectly adaptable to a HDB situation, with is regular layout and fixed loadbearing walls. TIme for some creativity in the domestic realm!

Called the "Constrain Ball" (shouldn't it be wheel?), the device claims to act as a ruler replacement to draw straight lines. By the same creative agency that did the iPad light painting comes this stunning advertisment for Canon's line of Pixma printers. By placing drops of paint onto a membrane wrapped around an amplifier, a single sharp note is played causing the droplets of ink to jump, creating a fusion of coloured sculpture, and captured by centrifuging cameras snapping at 5,400 frames per second!

Soft Underbelly

The Soft Underbelly is a project by popupdesign, for the Glow event 2010 in City of Santa Monica, USA. While very simple in its form and materials, Soft Underbelly maximizes the tactile sensations experienced by the visitor. The project consists of a double layer canopy floating above an artificial landscape. The canopy is held aloft using metallic white helium filled balloons that will both glow under the black light, as well as reflect the light around them. The lower layer of the canopy is a hairy network made of thousands of threads of mono-filament line painted in glowing UV reactive paint.

Colourless - Harc Lee

A problem with recycling is that most of the time, material actually get down-cycled because of the presence of additives or other impurities. An example is the ubiquitous can drink with the label printed on it. Though recyclable, the percentage of aluminum recovered is actually much lower due to the colouring process (for the label). The brilliance of this design is that by imprinting the label, not only do we get a gorgeous new design, we are also spared the burden of creating the toxic dyes and the aluminum cans becomes considerably more recyclable. eBay Box

“eBay just launched a new set of reusable boxes as part of a pilot program to make shipping a little greener.

Starting in October, the company is giving away 100,000 shipping boxes to eBay sellers, and encouraging reuse. According to eBay, if each box gets used five times, the program could protect nearly 4,000 trees, save 2.4 million gallons of water, and conserve enough electricity to power 49 homes for a year.

Designed by San Francisco-based Office, the boxes engage sellers by emphasizing potential benefits to the planet with friendly illustrations and copy. Tips for greener packing include finding “a new calling for old phone books.” A happy little bird asks, “Where to next?” And to track each box’s journey, there’s space to write a note so the next person to receive it can see just how far it’s come.

Each eBay Box is made with 100 percent recycled content, printed with water-based inks, and designed to require minimal tape. And once it reaches the end of its useful shipping life, it’s fully recyclable. From the box’s fine print: “Don’t worry, it will come back as something nice, like a birthday card or movie theater popcorn bag.”

Designed as an outdoor pavilion, Sala Phuket Restaurant is the main restaurant in a resort in Phuket. With an indoor and outdoor dining capacity of 50 and 70 respectively, Architects Department of ARCHITECTURE Co., Ltd, did a great job coupling attention to detail and creating different spatial experiences. Columns were not in a tradition grid formation but in a natural rhythm of its own to create a sense of edgelessness.

“Solid volume of the service area, including kitchen and restroom, is separated from the main building; allowing the dining area to be surrounded entirely by nature. Unlike the dining area, the restroom, with constraint on its location, establishes its relation with nature in a different way. Hidden behind the wall, an outdoor space is carved out of the solid volume of the service area. This hidden open space with installation-setting vanities serves as a surprising entrance to the restroom.”

What do you get when you add crytopgraphy and architecture? A stunning installation apparently. Dzarch (architecture) & Suchy (crytography) collaborated to create this exciting structure which has potential applications from furniture design to building facades. Using computer simulations and rapid prototyping, the structure, which is made of seemingly random panels on a grid structure, rotates to create alignments that project 3 distinct shadows. Singapore occupies only about 700km2.

Multiply that by 1000, it is possible to fit the entire world’s population into a land area approximately twice of Italy, equal to Texas, 1/5 of India, 1/10 China...

1000 Singapores is also about the thousand faces of a high density city-state – a portrait of the diversity of the living environment and the people who live there. Ultimately, if 6.5million people are able to live sustainably on 700km2, this then offers a powerful model for the compact city of the future.

A city that is green.

A city with high intensity and fully integrated infrastructure.
A city that manages water and waste efficiently and effectively.
A city where the residents are creative and productive.

1000 Singapores takes housing beyond architectural typology. Housing is shown as an active act to create communities - a meta-project integrating architecture with governance, social systems, finance and infrastructure. Starting from the most basic pre-fabricated component, 1000 Singapores demonstrates how this is scaled up to towers, neighbourhoods, new towns, districts and the nation.

From the pragmatic to the sublime; from public housing toprivate housing; from the carefully planned micro-home to the townships strung together by rapid transit; from social policies to estate management, 1000 Singapores will paint a picture of an intelligent city based on home ownership. A city where the house forms a critical building block of society.

1000 Singapores explores the character and qualities of a compact city and how people and architecture meet to form avibrant society. With one 35m long model and a thousand images, this exhibition will tease apart the many melodic strands of this intricate planning fugue to show how it all comes together as one complex system.

Here is the project description:
Architectural computation is generally promoted in relation to high-tech building systems and iconic towers. Earl’s Gourmet Grub is a test case in how computational architecture can enrich
everyday use. The restaurant was designed with contemporary technology to fit an old-world sensibility inspired by its food. Torquing ceiling surfaces and inscribed digital patterns are combined with a rich material and color palette to evoke both technological refinement and the more rustic feel of alpine landscapes and Viennese cafes.

Earl’s is an artisanal deli and gourmet market that opened in May 2010 in Los Angeles. The 1000sf. tenant improvement is conceived of as an interior landscape; a variable and shifting space defined by a series of torqued ceiling surfaces and light ’scoops’. The ceiling creates an airy, light-filled canopy with local intensities modulated by wood ‘baffles’ of oscillating depth. These rhythmic undulations both subdivide the linear space into a series of spatial pockets and produce dynamic spatial continuity from front to back.

The clients, Yvonne McDonald and Dean Harada, requested a contemporary architectural identity but one that evoked the rustic or alpine qualities of the fresh ingredients used in the food. The west wall, which spans the entire depth of the space, is embossed with an image of the Alps abstracted as a series of rectangular computational ‘bits’. The result – alpine picturesque run through a computational filter – evokes neither pure landscape nor pure technology, opening up a wider range of associations

It may force you to lose your appetite, but this campaign by Pantene sure is effective. Salt shakers, in the design of a woman’s head, were placed in bars, restaurants, and canteens. When shaken, salt crystals trickle out in the shape of dandruff. Check, please!

Pantene: Door Handle
Pantene makes a promise of strong hair. A poster with a real plait hanging from the back of a head was stuck on the doors of malls, supermarkets and beauty salons. The plait served as the door handle and each time patrons ‘pulled’ the hair handle, the core benefit of Pantene was communicated in an interesting manner.

Pantene Building Advertisement – Anti-Breakage Shampoo
To demonstrate the benefits of Pantene shampoo, professional climbers climbed a giant ponytail attached to a building in Toronto

Pantene: Envelope
Media establishments received a variety of information on Pantene’s latest products and most recent events in a branded envelope. The string that seals the envelope appears to be coming from the woman’s hair on the flap. To seal or unseal it means putting pressure on the string effectively dramatizing strong hair.

Pantene – Stops split ends
This campaign took advantage of the lamppost shape to express the physical aspect of split end hair.

Pantene – Hang up the line
A great “below the line” ad for Pantene done by Grey in Malaysia, Showing a hanging Girl Mobile and a window Sign, that claims “Making hair 10x stronger”. The way they are made, as if they are actually hung by one single hair-line of the girls head looks amazing! It just can’t be ignored without getting your attention.

Some are clever others a bit disturbing. Nonetheless, we applaud Pantene for stepping out of the usual box to attract our attention.

Masterfoods and FHV BBDO in the Netherlands encouraged 16 to 24 year olds to engage with the Mars Bar brand with “Messages from Mars”, a Gold Design Lion winner at Cannes International Advertising Festival. The campaign involved removing the iconic labelling from the bar, leaving it black, and providing consumers with the complete alphabet in Mars typography, including punctuation marks. The bar became an interactive object that gave people the possibility to create their own messages and give these to friends, colleagues or family.

Perrier Campaign

Perrier’s “melt” print ads were shot by Jean-Yves Lemoigne. These took home a Cannes Silver Lion in 2009. You may have also noticed the eye-catching Perrier television commercial for the same campaign. Shot by director Frederic Planchon for Ogilvy Paris, it’s not a new campaign for the brand, having been executed in 2009, but it’s only been airing in North America lately.
