The Ledge - Skidmore, Owings and Merrill‏

A sense of vertigo by SOM.
Inspired by hundreds of forehead prints on the Skydeck window, "The Ledge" is an glass floor balcony which offers the spectacular city of Seattle at your feet quite literally if you get over the initial panic of beings suspended 103 stories in the air. The half-inch thick glass can remarkably hold 5 ton of weight, approximately the weight of an Asian elephant we find in Mandai Zoo. In instances like these, we sure hope the engineers are spot on with their calculations, but this is nonetheless a project that pushed the envelope both metaphorically and figuratively.
