The Heritage of Blair Road

Amongst Singapore’s conserved buildings, architects Ong & Ong have completed an Art Deco shop house, 31 Blair Road, on a historical site rich in heritage. As a renovation to a conservation building, a delicate balance emerged between the existing traditional façade and the newly constructed contemporary interior, designed not only in context to the surrounding buildings but also for the modern living of the tenants.

Approaching the house, one is greeted by a luscious bamboo garden within the forecourt which subtly complements the sensitively restored façade bearing bamboo motifs. Pass the double leafed entrance; it opens up to a series of connected spaces which allows for multiple activities to blend in this narrow plot. A mezzanine space was created on the second floor to allow for extra space which led to the creation of a jack roof to allow more natural light in. An internal courtyard bisects the house to allow for more daylight as well as natural ventilation of the spaces. Rooms above can open to this spacious air well, blurring the boundary of inside/outside spaces. Adorned by sandalwood stonewall, the courtyard is also complemented by a bamboo garden which not only sets the mood for a relaxing space but also carries through the bamboo theme into the house from the entrance. Circulation through the levels are aided by both a main folded steel staircase in front of the house which hangs delicately, creating a sculptural centrepiece as well as a spiral staircase at the back which leads to a roof terrace, an ideal space for many social activities.
Throughout the house the monochromatic scheme of subtle colours and textures not only compliments the spaces but also accentuate the beauty of this historic piece of architectural heritage.
