Going back in time to the 1960s, we came across this is an ingenious idea. We all love great ideas, especially one with a good story behind it. Apparently, Alfred Heineken visited the Caribbean and saw two problems- too much beer bottles being littered around and too little construction materials. After a few drinks (of Heineken no doubt), he had an epiphany and got John Habraken to design a beer bottles that can be used as building materials. This was long before William McDonough invented the phrase ‘upcycling’ but probably a most apt example of this concept of finding greater purpose for materials after the end of their first usage.
