MIT Chapel Building - Eero Saarinen

We recently came across this breathtaking MIT chapel by Eero Saarinen. Built in 1955, the interfaith chapel is conspicuous by the absence of any religious symbols; instead Saarinen employs languages of light and form to awaken spirituality. The building form is essentially a rectangular narthex connected to a cylindrical chapel. The cylinder is surrounded by a moat, a subtle use of water to separate it further from the urban landscape and into its inner world of contemplation. The simplicity of its form belies a stunning interior with dramatic spaces, demonstrating how unassuming bricks can be transformed into a sublime piece of architecture.
